Life after the BIG CHOP

Posted by Migdalia Boyd on

Yesterday while at a hair show, I met a lady who recently did the Big Chop.  She was with another lady and she mentioned something about her having a bad hairline.  Me being the person I am told her so what, we all have something that we don't like about ourselves.  Embrace it, accept it and carry on.  Well later during the show, Karen of Karen's Body Butter was speaking and she asked if anyone had recently did the Big Chop and the same lady slowly raised her hand.  Karen asked her another question (I don't remember what it was) and the lady began to cry. Long story short, the lady was feeling insecure about her hair, and her self-esteem was extremely low.  Needless to say, there was a lot of tears in the room, but a lot more love was passed around.

Many times (at least I know I did) we gaze at all of the pictures of the perfect hair on social media and are extremely disappointed when our hair isn't the perfect hair.  But really what is perfect hair?  Well, my definition of perfect hair is the hair that grows out of your head.  Simple as that.  It's not so much about the hair per say.  It's the attitude and the confidence that goes along with the hair.  It's the style that you encompass, how you feel about you when you step in a room.  Coco Chanel said "A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life."  That is one of the realest statements I have ever read!

I too did the Big Chop.  I always had long hair with a ponytail that laid on my back everyday.  But one night after 3 months of what I called transitioning, I went in the bathroom and cut it off.  Everyone around me felt some kind of way.  Like they grew my hair out of their head!  But you see I'm that stubborn one who really doesn't care what anyone thinks.  Yes, I felt awkward, but I was more so excited!  What was my hair going to look like, how long would it get? So yes I was thrilled while they were looking at me like I had lost my mind.  (I had recently lost my grandmother, so maybe I did just a little)But I needed a change, and I'll tell you I found it!

So the Big Chop has happened now what???? Patience, love, more patience, and most importantly self love.  Not everyone is going to embrace the new you.  You may feel like you look crazy.  You don't, this is YOU.  This is the unadorned, you at your most genuine state.  Look at yourself, you are beautiful!  Love yourself!  If you feel like plain Jane, there are many things we can do to accentuate our beauty until our Crown and Glory returns.  I used big hoops and lip gloss.  I'm not a barrette or bow type of girl so I passed.  I wore braids for a little while and the rest of the time, it was short hair, lil puffs, and my big jaws!  Yes, they continued to look at me like I was crazy and my mister STILL hates my hair (that's his problem, not mine) but I loved and still love it.

Basically, what I want you to know is regardless of the texture or length.  Regardless of whether or not your hair looks like the girl in the picture, it's yours!  No other person in this world can reproduce that head of hair that you have.  It may resemble yours but no two heads are the same.  You've cut your hair and now life begins.  Yes social media has taken us by storm and you will see that girl with the perfect frolicious hair. But look past her hair.  Look at her style, her confidence.  That is what is drawing you to her, it's not just her hair.  If you took all of the extras away 9 times out of 10 we wouldn't be so intrigued.  So the next time you are scrolling, look at the total picture.  Take ideas of the scene and see if there is anything that you can take away to try for you.  It may be the earrings, a scarf, her lippie.  Trust me it's not just her hair.

You've cut your hair now while you PATIENTLY wait for it to regrow, take time and get to know that girl in the mirror.  Accept her flaws, laugh at them now work with them  Once you get to truly know her, I promise you'll Love her to Life!
